When not rigging the machine, luck is almost always a factor in a slot game. Whether you play slot machine games offline in an amusement arcade, pub or casino or whether you opt for the online version in the online casinos: If you have a bad day, you lose your games. Whoever is lucky wins. Last but not least, this means that anyone who sells anyone a 100% secure system that ALWAYS wins at slot machines is a charlatan. What is feasible: You can reduce the risk of your own losses a little and increase the chance of winning a little. This article shows how this works.
A look at the payout ratio
In order to assess your own chances of winning, it is always worth taking a look at the payout percentage of a slot machine. It describes as a percentage how much of the money wagered by players is paid out by the machines as a win. The payout rate is of course always a percentage below 100 percent. After all, the machine operator wants to earn something with his slot machine. How far below 100 percent the value is, however, varies greatly.
As a rule, slot machine games in online casinos have a payout rate of well over 90 percent. On the Internet you can always find information from testers who, for example, certify a payout rate of 98 percent for the slot machine game “Blood Suckers”. High RTP machines tend to be better for the player. However, the quota says nothing about how the machines pay out the money again.
The game should suit the player
Some slot machines rarely pay out winnings, which are then, however, higher. Others let players win more often. However, the individual profits tend to be lower. More or less bulging jackpots continue to play a not inconsiderable role as an incentive to play. Nevertheless, modern manufacturers of slot machines seem to increasingly rely on the latter variant with many rather small wins. For example, according to a report with video in Focus magazine, slot machines in the past only paid out a win three times out of 100, while modern slot machines give the player a win 45 times out of 100.
Paying attention to the type of payout the slot machine offers does not increase the chance of winning a game. However, it serves the player’s preferences: those who prefer small wins more often choose one variant of the slot machines, while the others opt for machines with rarer but tendentially higher wins.
Slot machine tricks: Can luck be influenced?

Tricks from the gray area? There is also!
As already described: In a regular slot machine game, the luck factor can never be completely ruled out. In very rare cases, however, there are tricks that make things work. In October 2018, the newspaper Bild reported on Australian teenagers who outsmarted a “deal or no deal” slot machine.
The machine is based on the principle of the game show of the same name, in which the player chooses one of twenty suitcases, for example. The suitcases contain different sums (e.g. between one cent and 250,000 euros). The player does not know what amount is kept in “his” suitcase. Little by little, however, he and the game master find out what sum is NOT in the suitcase.
At regular intervals, the game master now tries to buy the player’s suitcase. The purchase offer is influenced by the amounts that could still be in the player’s suitcase. Either the player sells their suitcase at some point or keeps it to the end and gets the amount that is in the suitcase.
In the Australian slot game, there were sixteen fields of points ranging from 1 to 800. They were shown to the player before being closed and shuffled at a pace incomprehensible to the human eye. However, the teenagers filmed the procedure at the machine with an iPhone and were able to watch it in slow motion. That’s how it works, of course. But as written: This is the exception.
A reminder of the most important rule of the game
This article should end with a reminder of the most important rule of any slot game: only responsible gaming is fun. If you neglect responsibility, you turn the game into an ugly kind of horror game. If you love horror games, it’s better to choose highlights from the appropriate category. When it comes to slots, each player should only play with money that, in extreme cases, they could lose completely without getting into serious trouble. Only then is such a game a nice pastime, in which there is also a profit from time to time.
